Since discovering Ted Lasso (much by accident) after the first show I was hooked and happily binge watched 3 entire series over several weekend. Anyone who hasn’t seen it you absolutely have to. The show is centred around an American football coach navigating the world of English football, presents a masterclass in leadership. While Ted’s leadership style may seem unconventional, it offers valuable lessons that could translate seamlessly into the business world. Here’s why in my opinion  Ted Lasso would be a great leader in business.

  1. Relentless Positivity and Optimism

Ted Lasso’s most defining trait is his unwavering positivity. In the business world, where challenges and setbacks are inevitable, a leader who maintains a positive outlook can inspire and motivate their team. Ted’s ability to see the silver lining in every situation helps to foster a resilient and upbeat workplace culture, essential for driving long-term success.

  1. Empathy and Emotional Intelligence

Ted’s leadership is deeply rooted in empathy. He takes the time to understand his team members’ personal and professional struggles, offering support and encouragement. In business, a leader who demonstrates emotional intelligence can build stronger relationships, enhance team cohesion, and create a supportive environment where employees feel valued and understood.

  1. Focus on Team Building

One of Ted’s key strategies is his focus on team dynamics. He understands that a successful team is greater than the sum of its parts. By promoting collaboration, mutual respect, and a sense of belonging, Ted ensures that his team works together effectively. In a business setting, fostering a strong team spirit can lead to increased productivity, innovation, and job satisfaction.

  1. Adaptability and Willingness to Learn

Despite his lack of experience in football, Ted approaches his role with a willingness to learn and adapt. He listens to feedback, seeks advice, and continuously improves his understanding of the game. In business, adaptability is crucial. A leader who is open to learning and evolving can navigate market changes and industry disruptions more effectively, ensuring the company’s sustained growth and relevance.

  1. Integrity and Authenticity

Ted Lasso’s authenticity and integrity are central to his leadership style. He remains true to his values and principles, earning the trust and respect of those around him. In business, leaders who act with integrity build trust with employees, customers, and stakeholders. This trust is fundamental for establishing a positive reputation and fostering long-term relationships.

  1. Encouraging Growth and Development

Ted is committed to the personal and professional growth of his team members. He encourages them to reach their full potential, offering guidance and opportunities for development. In a business context, a leader who invests in their employees’ growth not only boosts morale but also enhances the overall capability and competitiveness of the organisation.

  1. Celebrating Success and Learning from Failure

Ted understands the importance of celebrating successes, no matter how small, to boost team morale and motivation. He also views failures as learning opportunities rather than setbacks. This approach can be incredibly effective in a business environment, where recognising achievements and embracing a growth mindset can drive continuous improvement and innovation.

In Conclusion

Yes, Ted Lasso is a fictional character, but the leadership principles he embodies are very real and highly relevant to the business world. His positivity, empathy, team-building skills, adaptability, integrity, commitment to growth, and ability to celebrate successes and learn from failures make him an exemplary leader. By adopting some of Ted Lasso’s leadership qualities, business leaders can create a more engaged, motivated, and resilient workforce, driving their organisations towards greater success.

I’d love to work for Ted, would you?
